General
Nevada is one of the western states of the United States, bordered to the
south west by California, to the north by Oregon and Idaho and to the east
by Utah and Arizona.
Nevada was annexed by the United States in 1848 following the war between
Texas and Mexico. In 1859, the discovery of a gold and silver vein led
to a "gold rush" of thousands of pioneers to Virginia City.
Nevada detached from Utah and became a territory in 1861 and a State of
the Union in 1864. Nevada is, in terms of wealth, the fourth of the States
in the Great Western region. A land of high desert plateaus, Nevada has
vast mineral resources at its disposal. Its economy is, however, to a
large extent founded on tourism and gaming, which benefits from a very
liberal fiscal system.
